GP & J Baker

GP & J Baker, founded by brothers George Percival and James Baker in 1884, consists of an impressive seven brands; GP & J Baker, Mulberry, Threads, Baker Lifestyle, Kravet, Lee Jofa and Brunschwig & Fils. Having been producing stunning prints and weaves for over a century, this company have one of the most exciting and largest privately owned textile archive in the world.

The Archive

GP & J Baker have conjured a huge archive of a spectacular range of documents dating back to the 18th century. This rich resource has provided inspiration for the design studio since the company was founded, designs are skilfully adapted in order to meet today’s tastes and colour palettes. A large contribution of pattern books in the archive can be traced back to renowned Swaisland Fabric Printing Company, which the brothers purchased shortly after arriving in England. This unique archive provides an extraordinary insight into all the major trends during the 18th century, this leads to the GP & J Baker archive to be considered a ” reliable history of design and printing in England”. Designers from all of the GP & J Baker brands are constantly making use of this remarkable archive, bringing to life stunning large scale prints such as ” Nympheus” and “Magnolia” , not forgetting the more delicate designs ” Oriental Bird” and ” Peony and Blossom” – all coming from this treasure trove.

To this date, only a fraction of this exceptional resource has been used – meaning GP & J Baker’s team of designers will be able to explore its rich heritage for decades to come.
